Steam Studios has a really good reason for procrastinating
on this newsletter... but we'll tell you about it
later.
Okay, okay... we know it's the 15th, and we normally
get the newsletter out in the first week of every
month. But this has been one hectic first half of
July!
And we've learned some valuable lessons this time
around! Like... don't let both principals of
your company move at the same time! That's right...
Sam and Steve have moved into new residences, and,
being the geniuses that we are, we picked the very
same weekend to do it. (But in all fairness, we're
design geniuses, not moving-into-new-housing geniuses.)
So, without further ado, a thousand apologies from
your friends here at Steam Studios. At least this
newsletter makes it to you on a Friday, so hopefully
you'll be (somewhat) entertained at work. Enjoy!

Welcome
to Joe's Apartment... er... Steve's new house
There's
only one thing that Steve fears in this world more than
sharks and that is (dun dun dun!) roaches! And his
new house was infested with them. After scoring an unbelievably
great price for a College Park house rental (he'd tell
you his rent, but you'd skin him alive), he and his
roommates found out why the price was so good: The house already had occupants.
Lots and lots of six-legged ones! After rallying together,
he and his roomies (and the pest control guy) managed
to drive back the invading insect horde. As of this
writing, he and his roomies are no longer afraid to
walk around the house barefoot.
In
other news...
Samson Cranford has joined the ranks of first-time
homeowners everywhere. We'd tell you about the awesome
deal he got on his new house, but, y'know, that whole
"skinning us alive" thing.

Easy access to Right-Brain mode
So you've got to get in "creative mode"
for your big project, but your stuck in "if A
equals B, and B equals C, then A must equal C"
mode. Nothing wrong with that, friend. You're stuck
in the normal state of affairs known as "left-brain
thinking". Built on logic, left-brain thinking
allows us to balance our checkbooks, spell words and
function in everyday society.
But for creative work? Not the best place to be in.
So how do you get to the intuitive, free-flowing,
emotional state that is "right-brain thinking"?
In all honesty, there are a zillion tricks. But we're
gonna share one of our favorites...
1. Sit comfortably at a desk, drawing table or
even on the floor
2. Curl up your left hand, but not into a fist. Make
sure that your fingers protrude and curl in any way that you see
fit.
3. With a pencil and paper, begin drawing your left
hand with your right hand on the paper.
4. As you draw, concentrate on your left hand and
ONLY your left hand. Note the creases created by the
folds in your hand and fingers. Pay attention to the
areas created by the shadows on your hands. Focus
on the "space" around your fingers and knuckles...
5. And never, ever let your hand leave the sheet of
paper! You're trying to draw your hand in one smooth,
continuous line.
And if you're left-handed, just reverse the hand positions
in Steps 1 - 5.
In about 5-10 minutes, up will be down, day will be
night, and you'll be in that creative zone where ideas
and thoughts bounce around freely and willy-nilly
in your head, just waiting for you to seize on one.
Go ahead and take your pick. If it doesn't work out,
you can always start again and pursue another creative
idea. And you can finally stop pulling out your hair
when someone asks you to be "creative".

Giant
Robot : www.giantrobot.com
Even without the really cool name, Giant Robot
would be a really cool magazine. Covering all
aspects of Tokyo's underground youth culture,
it... What's that? Why should you care about Tokyo
and/or its underground youth culture? Because
Tokyo is light-years ahead of us in terms of technology,
fashion and "let's-throw-it-at-the-wall-and-see-if-it-sticks"
attitude, that's why! And thanks to Giant Robot,
we knew what a "harajuku girl" was waaaay
before you and Gwen Stefani did. So there. |

What if we told you that there was this great
annual competition for Flash animators? And what

a result of this competition? Well, we couldn't,
because... it's The Greatest Story NEVER Told!
(Sorry for the bad pun, but we just couldn't resist.
Just click the link, watch some cool online cartoons
and we'll pretend this never happened.)

This is the section in which we normally have a funny parting thought, or special offers for our clients, or the occasional Hollandaise recipe.
But not today!
We're too worn out for that. (Told you July has been a busy month. Yay, us!)
Have a great weekend, and we'll see you next month... on time.
