Another month, another web design award.

Since we were so hellbent on delivering laughs o' plenty in last month's ish, we neglected to mention that we've won yet ANOTHER prestigious web design award.
We have since been presented with AdesDesign's coveted "Site of the Month" Award for April 2005. And if you know web design, you know AdesDesign. Since being founded in early 2003 by world-renowned web designer Abdylas Tynyshov (seriously), AdesDesign has become a one-stop shop for web designers the world over for the latest news, forums and information. And the coolest thing about the AdesDesign Award? It's voted on by web designers FOR web designers.
We're honored and thrilled to receive this award.
We'd say we're humbled, but c'mon... we rock!

Steve attending Advertising Conference the weekend of May
13th - 15th. Total annihilation of his social life almost complete.
Thanks to AD2 footing the bill, Steam Studios designer Steve McCain gets to attend the 4th District Conference this month. The 4th District of the American Advertising Federation (which encompasses ad clubs in Florida and the Caribbean) is a chance for ad club members to come together for workshops, networking and information on how to do everything better. In thanks for this opportunity, Steve has promised to not embarass Steam Studios and/or AD2. However, reliable sources have confirmed that he kept his fingers crossed while making said promise.
Fortunately the conference is located this year in good 'ol Orlando, FL.

In other news...
Samson Cranford has given up his futile quest of getting business partner Steve McCain to participate in a corporate 5k
run. Steve's aversion to physical activity: 1; Sam's powers of
persuasion: 0.

False Mis-Registration
Everyone knows that retro is the new black, but is it possible to truly capture the kitschy spirit of the 50's in your designwork?
In a word... no. But you CAN approximate the retro look! In one small step, no less.
Let's look at artwork that might be produced using today's advanced graphics programs and sophisticated printing presses ( See Fig. 1). Sure,
it's got the bold, smooth lines of an illustration circa 1955, but
something's missing...
That's where false registration comes in. Just by shifting the colors a
tad (using your mouse. Ahh, the wonders of technology), you get a
simulated mis-registration ( See Fig. 2). And now your illustration looks
instantly more "retro". But why?
Back in the day, printing presses weren't nearly as sophisticated and
accurate as they are now. Registration, the system that printers use to
accurately line up colors when printing from various color plates, was
a dicey affair, so, more often than not, misregistration was a fact of
life. And with the advent of marketing and advertising as we know it,
there was suddenly a lot more printed material in the 50's. So more
people saw mis-registered printings, which became a look that we
associate with the 50's, and the 50's are definitely retro.
So if your printer's too accurate to mess up your colors for you, you
can approximate the off-the-register mishaps that we associate with
yesterday's bygone eras. And all within the graphics program of your
choice!

Star Wars - Revelations: www.panicstruckpro.com
With the massive letdown that was Star Wars Episodes I and II, a group
of dedicated fanboys (and fangirls) spent the last 3 years making the ultimate fan-film. And if you think this particular online flick will be just another showcase of bad acting, weak story structure and utter
geekiness, well, you're absolutely right. But the production value is
nothing short of astonishing and the passion for the material is
undeniable. Sorry, Mr. Lucas, but THIS is how you make a Star Wars
movie. |

Rotten Tomatoes : www.rottentomatoes.com
It's the great conundrum of the 21st century: How does one stay
informed of the quality of newly-released films, while not having the
time to actually read any movie reviews? Let Rotten Tomatoes do it for
you! Instead of reading one film critic, Rotten Tomatoes assembles the
opinions of hundreds of critics and spits out an easy-to-digest
percentage. Anything above 60% = "The Matrix". Anything below 60% = "The Matrix: Revolutions".

The Force is strong with this one... (we hope)
Much like the geeks who made that Star Wars short film, we here at Steam Studios are total fanboys at heart. So we'll be throwing down
our hard-earned money for tix to Star Wars: Episode III as soon as it
hits theaters on May 19th. And the only thing we can
say to that is:
Please, please, please don't suck like Episodes I and II!!
We've sat through Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd's "acting", and midi-chlorians
(whatever the hell those are)! C'mon, George... don't let us down, man. And to our clients, if we're really happy or really cranky on May 20th,
you have advance warning as to why.
