Better Late Than Never

Samson goes bi-coastal. People of the world exclaim: "I knew it!"

AAF National Conference Samson Cranford, one half of the Steam Studios design team, will be on vacation from September 23rd through October 1st. He'll be in San Diego, California attending the wedding of his nephew and getting some much needed R & R.

Meanwhile, Steve McCain, the design team's other half, will still be here, hard at work and trying desperately not to have a meltdown.

During Sam's vay-kay, we kindly ask our clients to direct all comments/inquiries/hate mail to Steve McCain. And to speak in as calm and reassuring a voice as possible.

Powerbook 'em, Sammo

You may remember from our December '04 newsletter that Samson's Christmas Wish List included a Mac Powerbook. Well, it's been a long time comin', but he finally got one, thanks to Steam Studios' financial success this year. (Believe us... These things ain't cheap!) Designers everywhere can finally welcome him to the 21st century.

In other news... As of this writing, none of the items on Steve's wish list (which included World Peace!!!) have been received. Way to go, Santa!

Design 101
Line Weight

A million different things can affect the look of your drawings, and in this installment we focus on the "weight" of lines.

If you're scratching your head at this statement, you're probably confusing weight with thickness. Most of you are familiar with the concept of "thickness", a thin line has a measurement that is different from a thick line. The line with the larger stroke is obviously "thicker" than the line with a smaller stroke.

But "weight" is all about emphasis. Let's take a look at the following drawings...

The drawing on the left has the same placement of lines as the drawing on the right. However, the drawing on the left, has a line stroke of 1pt on each of its lines. All of its lines are equal in "weight". This has the effect of making the drawing as a whole look flat, with very little depth.

The drawing on the right, by contrast, has lines that very in thickness and weight. Look at the right collar in this drawing: lines taper from thick to thin, or grow from thin to thick, adding an overall sense of depth and emphasis. Because of this effect, the drawing seems to be more "solid" than the drawing on the left, therefore this drawing has more "weight". (Line weight is beginning to make sense now, huh?)

Neither of these drawings are "right" or "wrong". They are just perceived differently because of their line weight. What you want to achieve as an illustrator will depend on your subject matter and message, and you can choose line weight (or lack thereof) accordingly.

Cool Sites That We Love
  Technorati : www.technorati.com
By now you're probably well aware of the blog zeitgeist, but how do you separate the wheat from the chaff? For every Wonkette.com, there are a hundred blogs about people and their X-men obsessions. Enter Technorati. Now you can search for blogs that you may, believe it or not, actually want to read!
  Snopes.com : www.snopes.com
This link comes courtesy of Steve's girlfriend, who, like you, was tired of living in fear of razor blades hidden in apples and the adverse effects of mixing Coke and Pop Rocks. Snopes.com hasn't met an urban legend that it can't deconstruct, debunk or demystify. (Except for the gremlin that lives in Steve's house and steals his socks. That urban legend is 100% true!)
  Mp3.com : www.mp3.com
Sure it's an oldie, but it's such a goodie! Chances are, like us, you've forgotten about Mp3.com in the post-Napster shuffle. Which is a shame since Mp3.com has EVERYTHING you need to keep up on the latest in the music scene: videos, downloadable tracks from major and indie artists, and a plethora of news and info. MTV wishes it could make music this much fun again.
